The Benefits of Walking

Walking is an activity that can be practiced by anyone. It is essential to our health. Studieshave shown that only 15 minutes of walking per day are enough to reduce the risks of morbidity and mortality, and on the long-term, are beneficial on a cognitive level.

Nature also has quite a few benefits. Studies suggest that simple images of vegetation would stimulate the parts of our brain known to be linked to emotions like empathy and love. Another study showed that walking in nature increases brain capacity. On this matter, the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support Association conducted a study stating that “ two and a half hour of walking or gardening every week could improve stress management and increase wellness. ” (La Presse, 2013).

Furthermore, did you ever notice that more often than not, we aren’t mentally present when we walk? Our mind is wandering, we make plans, we think about what we’ve done and what is to come. And there come stress and anxiety.  

What benefits would we have if we’d combine all three elements: walking, nature and mindfulness?

Benefits of walking :

·       Increases bone density which prevents osteoporosis;
·       Relieves joints and ease arthrosis pain;
·       Increases daily caloric expenditure;
·       Relieves back pain.

·       Plants in the office boost productivity;
·       Vegetation provides a sense of security;
·       Natural landscapes stimulate the parts of the brain linked to empathy;
·       Flowers bring positive emotions.

Benefits of mindfulness :
·       Decreases stress and anxiety;
·       Boosts concentration, attention and creativity;
·       Brings positive thoughts and improves mood;
·       Helps to take a step back and let go, to better manage stress and priorities and to feel calm towards unfamiliar situations;
·       Improves sleep quality.


Still not convinced?If so, don’t hesitate and start now: get out and start walking! Remember that even in urban areas, it’s still possible to get the same benefits as a walk in nature.
