A Matter of Balance!

According to the Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal, mental health issues in the workplace cost Canadian companies nearly 14% of their net annual profits. It represents up to 16 billion dollars each year.

Depression is identified as one of the firsts causes for disability claims. Yet, few initiatives to prevent depression are correctly and efficiently established in the workplace.

What if we started to talk about balance to the staff?

What is Balance?

The Oxford Dictionary defines balance as : “ A situation in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.”

We tend to think that balance is a perfect midpoint, when in fact it is more of a harmonious and stable cohesionthat implies a variety of factors.

Balance in Yoga

Balance is an integral part of the yogic approach. Balance Asanas (postures) are a challenge.

One the one hand, their execution requires stability and alignment to be able to remain stable over a certain period of time. On the other hand, balance postures also require an excellent breathing control, soothing gaze, concentration, acceptance and respects for limits.

It is only when we acknowledge our limits that we can adapt our posture to bring back harmony and compassion towards ourselves.

Daily Balance

The same goes with balance in our day-to-day life. In general, it is difficult to reach a state of balance if we aren’t aware of the current situation and of the elements that affect our balance.

To find and maintain balance is a path and not a destination. Life moves constantly, and it is important to adjust ourselves to stay stable. We must take into account every sphere of our life. We have to nourish them, not in a fair way but more in a harmonious way. It is that balance that allows us to create and keep OUR balance.

In recent years, a balance component had been added to many health campaigns, such as our partners Défi Santé and Défi Entreprises.  These challenges were first created to promote an active and healthy lifestyle, but they also take into account the notion of balance for a better overall health.

Conclusion

Whether we are yogi or not, it is important to be aware that several factors affect our global health. Nutrition, physical activity, relaxation, sleep, feelings and stress management among others are all interdependent elements that contribute to our overall wellness.
